On the way to Seattle....

Yesterday, we visited Timberline Lodge, where CJ and Kim will get married in February 2012. It was freezing cold and there was at least three feet of snow. It sure didn't feel like the end of May! On our way back, we visited the town of Government Camp and saw some pretty neat cabin-style houses. We ended the night seeing Kung Fu Panda 2. Yes!

This morning, we left Portland and headed towards Multnomah Falls. The weather is nicer today, but still pretty wet and misty by the falls.  As it's a holiday, it was very busy with all sorts of people. We hiked up to the bridge and got some great shots!

We are now en route to Bellvue, just outside of Seattle, to stay with Nate's Aunt Margaret (actually 3rd cousin, but we call her "Aunt" anyway) and her husband Tom. We always enjoy staying with them when we're in town, and they always like to show us show local gems.

Day 2: Portland

When we woke up this morning, the current weather from the WeatherBug app on my phone said it was 42 degrees with a "wintery mix."  (Not something I EVER experience in Arizona, let alone in late May.)  Still, we decided to head to downtown Portland for the farmer's market, which can be found on Saturdays right across from Portland State University.  Throughout the week, the farmer's market can be found at various locations around Portland.  Despite the chilly weather, there were plenty of people checking out the goods.  There were the typical farmer's market offerings of organic produce, cheeses, jams and jellies, and breads.  There were also unexpected items like salted caramel sauce (yum!), buckwheat honey, and purple asparagus (very cool!).  The first thing I noticed were all of the strawberries.  They looked nothing like the strawberries you get in the grocery store.  I just had to by a basket, and of course, eat them on the spot.  (Everyone was, and no one seemed to care they weren't washed, so I figured I'd live....). They were perfect!

There were plenty of vendors preparing treats as well.  I opted for a nutella and banana crepe over the special (lemon curd with strawberries and whipped cream).  I've now realized, once you have a good nutella and banana crepe, there aren't a lot ways to improve upon  it.  I wished I would have gone with the special.  Nate got a coffee from Cafe Velo and we moved on to check out the rest of the market.

We left the farmer's market to explore more of Portland.  Riding the free-rail tram made getting around easy.  We wandered around Powell's Bookstore, with it's many colored-coded levels and thousands of books. We then met Nate's aunt and uncle at St. Honore Bakery, a favorite of my parents'.  There pastries, especially croissants, are divine.  I chose a chocolate almond croissant, while Nate had a pastry named after the bakery itself.  Or maybe the bakery was named after the pastry.  Anyway, it was excellent.

And it begins.....

We begin our adventure today.  For five weeks, we will travel around the Pacific Northwest, seeing friends and family, checking out local favorites, and enjoying fresh air and the green of the Northwest.
I flew into Portland this afternoon, where Nate met me.  We begin our adventure in Portland, where we will stay with Nate's good friend, CJ, and his fiancee, Kim.  We are going to take it easy the next few days, as we recoup from the past crazy month.  In the last month, we moved, Nate finished up his 5 classes, and I had my wisdom teeth out while wrapping up the school year.  Needless to say, this trip is much-needed.  We look forward to reconnecting and making some great memories together on this trip.  The cool weather is a nice break from the approaching 100 degree heat in Arizona and it's nice to be in jeans in May!

Up for tomorrow (depending on the weather.....)
-The Downtown Portland Farmer's Market
-Stone Barn Brandyworks tasting
-St. Honore French Bakery
